With temperatures in the high 30s most of the day and a few snow showers, we were treated to our first winter O-meet of the season. Even with a meet that was not even posted on the schedule until January 14 and the less than desirable conditions, we had a higher than expected turn out of almost 100 runners, to include 7 groups on the Streamer Course.
I was fortunate to have a good group of volunteers that made this meet a success, starting foremost with Kris Beecroft's short notice course design and setting efforts.
Valerie Meyer once again set up and ran e-punch. Also, she was the course vetter on Saturday placing the e-punch boxes on the controls and helped coordinate control pick up.
The best made plans often go astray. After visiting the park on the weekend before, I determined that I did not need to bring my pop up tent for the start/finish area, because there was a nice shelter within a couple of feet. Upon arriving on race day, the shelter had collapsed in the snow and ice from the days before and we were stuck in the rain. Fortunately, we were able to move the registration area to a more permanent shelter and Valerie was able to run the e-punch and start/finish from her car near the start triangle.
Helping at the registration and start/finish areas were Rhonda Krafchin, Jim Thull, Lynne Millholland and Deborah McGee. This was Lynne's and Deb's first experience at an O- event and they were able to find their way through a course after helping.
Jan and Dagmar Merka once again set up the Streamer Course for our sprouting Orienteers and I was glad to see the number of participants that came out and enjoyed their course.
With the assistance of Greg Lennon, Rick Oliver, Dave Hauver, Tom Strat and Jon Torrance, controls were picked up and we were out of the park by 4pm.
Thanks to all. It's great people like this that make the meet director look good.
We would like to welcome new members Michael Spiller of Centreville, Dennis Doherty of Oak Hill, Tom, Marti, Melissa and Sara Terry of Springfield, Elaine Wooton and Lowell, Noah and Ian Cooper of Gaithersburg and Nathan Tennies of Chevy Chase. There were 10 other members that took the opportunity to renew there membership on Sunday.
