Lake Fairfax park and its log-cabin style Fairfax Hunt Club lodge was a delightful
location for the QOC Winter Meeting and Sprint courses. Greg Lennon mapped the park
for the first time, and it provided a change of pace orienteering location just outside the
beltway. We had 133 runners, many of whom ran more than one course.
Those courses were set by Tom Strat, who along with Trish and Greg
worked closely with park management to ensure that all their concerns
were allayed. We are hoping that we can work with them to expand the
use of the park in the future. After the race, the pot luck and pizza
dinner was enjoyed by many. Kids also had a chance to do the (free)

The Winter Meeting featured the first presentation of USOF Navigation Certificates, a call for a few Meet Directors and Course Setters, kudos (and spiffy custom orange drawstring backpacks) to recent Meet Directors and Course Setters, a brief outline of the planning for the November US Champs, a presentation on the QOC uniforms, and a reminder to all QOC members living in Maryland to sign up now for QOC license plates if you’d like your license plate to sport a favorite number. And of course all are welcome to help out in a variety of capacities at either QOC events or behind the scenes at organizational meetings like the Board of Director’s meeting, where recently a call has gone out to bring in more folks with professional experience in “the L’s”: legalities, lobbying, legislating, and litigating – lampooning and laughing welcome too.
Thanks to all for the help. I’ve done this several times before, but never had so many willing and helpful volunteers. Thanks again to Tom Strat for the course, and for helping out with instruction. Valerie Meyer gave the club another long day of effort providing e-punch support—which was available for all courses, even white! The help of Heidi Onkst, Paul Ruchlin and Brian Knight on e-punching was appreciated. Chris Rumohr and Jamie Webster helped with starts and instruction, respectively, and Jeff Dickey and Don Davis pitched in later to help with starts and finishes. Anna Panchenko, Nathan Hamal, Barbara Brocks, and Sarah Hale helped with registration. Brad Conver, Lee Taylor, and Brian Knight pitched in as well. A special thanks to Sid Sachs and Greg Lennon who saw the need to help with parking and just directed traffic without even being asked. Finally, we had a quick control pickup thanks to Victor Lin, Dave Hauver, Sid Sachs, Sam Listwak, and Linus Hamilton.
With respect to our dinner meeting, thanks to Heidi Onkst and Kathleen Lennon for organizing the potluck and pizza, Don Davis for warming up the place with his fire building survival skills, and Peggy Brosnan and Trish Strat for pitching in and helping with the set up and clean up.
