The final event of the regular season has ended. The turnout was normal but there was one guest we could have done without. The remnants of a tropical storm made it wetter than preferred. Ok, it rained almost the entire time. Fortunately we had several tarps which gave some dry ground in which to hang out for the picnic.
The courses consisted of the usual three loop courses with beverages consumed before each loop and at the very end. This year on the two advanced loops, every other control was forked which served to break up the packs and caused many place changes of the participants. Unfortunately several of the forks had a luck factor with a good choice and an unlucky choice. The unlucky choice led to dubious control locations so depending on the choice, some competitors lost time through no fault of their own.
The beverages consumed were the usual: water, soda, beer. There were some new additions to the beverage split winners: Sam Listwak, Tim Good, and Nadim Ahmed. Of course, the perennial favorites Valerie Meyer and Dan Quinn were just as fast in the split.
This meet is a great meet to be meet director as there are lots of volunteers and the meet director often gets to run. My thanks go out to everyone who helped at this meet. The beverage pourers did an excellent job of keeping everyone flowing through the map exchange each loop and providing ready filled cups.
There was one special sunny spot at the event. Kathleen Lennon distributed the new Quantico uniforms and many decided to wear them. This added a lot of color to the usual plethora of outfits. I think the new uniforms look great and pass on my kudos to the uniform task force who designed them.
Several people from SVO and DVOA drove down for this event. As usual DVOA people placed high in the standings although the ultimate winner was the prodigal QOC member returned, Ken Walker.
There was one new member Chris Gross. Chris is a DVOA transplant who we will work to wean his primary club membership from DVOA to QOC.
After the race was the picnic and awards ceremony. Heidi Onkst organized a smorgasbord of goodies/drinks for the picnic. I missed much of this so don’t have any good stories. I think people had fun although I heard people were huddled around the grill for warmth.
For the awards, The QOC volunteer award recognized Tom Strat for his outstanding achievements over the years as, President, Vice President, A Meet course setter/Registrar…. Sid Sach’s ranking system recognized Jan Merka and Jon Torrance for their yearly service and rankings at local meets. Heidi Onkst presented nylon QOC storage bags to the spring course setters and meet directors for their services.
At the general meeting, there were several new officers voted. Greg and Kathleen Lennon stayed on as President for one more year. New VPs are Kris Beecroft (VA) and Mike Newman (MD). Dave Hauver is Secretary and Victor Lin is Treasurer.
Overall, another successful year for QOC. Now is the time to volunteer for next year.
