Fountainhead
April 20, 2008
Meet Director: Dave Hauver
Course Designer: Victor Lin
It rained. It rained hard enough for flood watches to be issued
across the DC region; it rained hard enough to cancel an Earth Day
Festival on the National Mall. It did not rain hard enough to cancel
an orienteering meet.
Despite the weather, about forty brave individuals ventured out into
the woods at Fountainhead park, for a total of thirty five starts.
They weren't just the hard-core regulars, many of who were already
absent due to the USOF Middle Distance and Relay Championships in New
York. Instead, our ranks were bolstered by a large group of young
girls led by one of their mothers, cub scouts, and some visiting
travelers from the UK, Australia, and Norway.
The consensus was that it wasn't actually that bad after you had been
in the rain for thirty seconds and realized that you simply weren't
going to (and couldn't possibly) get any wetter. It was a warm day,
and though the trees were starting to turn green, visibility was still
good in the woods. Victor's courses were highly praised, and may
perhaps one day be enshrined in legend and myth. If you think this is
just hyperbole - well, you should have been there to find out for
yourself!
I'd like to thank to all of those who helped out today and offered
their assistance - Kris and Graham Beecroft (our e-punch wizards),
Victor Lin (the man, the myth, the legend), Dan James, Jon
Bertheussen, Amy Moroney, John Baker, James Chaplin, and George
Crittenden. I'd also like to specially thank Bill Vienna, who,
despite not running a course, came out on a rainy day, volunteered for
the entire meet, and still found time to help with control pickup.
Thanks again to all for your help - it is definitely appreciated!
