While the sun never managed to penetrate the thick cloud layer, and the temperature climbed no higher than 55, and there was the occasional even chillier wind or bit of drizzle, the combination of a well-designed set of courses and a brand new venue with an A’meet quality map did allow those attending to experience the warm feeling of fine orienteering. Rosaryville State Park has quite varied terrain, from wide open fields and forests to dense woods with surprisingly steep gullies (made even slicker by the previous night’s rain), and, fortunately, a dense trail network through most of the thickest patches of vegetation. It couldn’t have been easy to map, but Jon Torrance did an excellent mapping job, and Nadim Ahmed’s courses took full advantage of the park. If you missed this event, don’t worry, though: Rosaryville is sure to enter our pantheon of regular venues so you’ll get another chance before too long.
The Streamer-O course was better attended than the results indicated, too, we just missed getting several names, so if you’re owed a certificate, just let us know.
Many participants also made quick work of the grilled food served by John & Jody Landers – thanks guys! The coals also helped stave off the chills, especially for the registration area volunteers who included (in alphabetical order) Mike Ford, Joe Garman, Bill Haskell, & Stephen White. Epunching was led by Heidi Onkst, assisted by Gayle Ryan; and controls were swiftly picked up by Tim Good, Dave Hauver, Dave Linthicum, Michael Newman, Tom Nolan, Jon Torrance & Bryan Williams. Streamer-O was designed by Dasa Medag.
