What do we have to be thankful for? There were four days of terrible weather from Wednesday through Saturday and then on Sunday the sun came out and produced a perfect day. Same old course? No way! It’s been years since there has been an event at Oregon Ridge. So we had a new map and a new place. And did the people showed up! We had a folks from SVO, a bunch from DVOA and a lot from the home team, QOC. We even had one from HVO (Hudson Valley) and BAOC, that’s the bay area orienteering club, like in San Francisco Bay. Someone came from Ohio and another from the UK. With all that - Parking! – Not a problem. What’s not to like?
As you know, all of this takes place because of volunteers. It starts with the map. And the new map drawn by Francis Hogle with the help of Greg Lennon and Eddie Bergeron. Not an easy task. Francis set the course and it was vetted by Eric Weymen of DVOA to make sure all was correct. After a couple of minor adjustments were made all was ready to go. At set up on Sunday morning the staff at Oregon Ridge made us feel like company. They made sure we had a place to plug into and provided us with tables for the registration and e-punch area. And then there are the volunteers on the day of the event. Registration was handled by two veterans, co-director Kirsten Johnson and my cousin Mickey (Marc Dixon). Since this was a Mid-Atlantic Championship we needed people to control the start – which was up the hill, up over to your left, follow the streamers, into the woods, back behind the nature center, and keep going until you find it. For the white and yellow competitors this was the hardest part of their run. The first to be stuck back in the woods was Jeff Haskell, an old timer at all of this, who was relieved by Frank Sigwart, who has just come off the DL. What can you say about e-punch! It makes it so much easier for all of us, except of course for the people who run the e-punch. For most of the day the computers were manned (or womenned) by Heidi Onkst from QOC and Sandy Fillebrown from DVOA. But Valerie Meyer got there before the day was through to join in on the fun. At days end, when the main courses have been run and the relays have come to an end and everybody is tired there are still those controls out there in them there woods to be picked up. So Francis Hogle along with Dave Linthicum, Ed Scott, Ted Good, Mike Newman and Greg Lennon did the task. And thanks to those others who volunteered to help, but there are only so many bags available for control pick-up.
